How the DJ key compatibility check works

The calculator maps 24 major and minor keys onto a circle-of-fifths layout. It treats the same key, its relative major or minor, and the two adjacent keys in the same mode as conservative harmonic-mixing choices.

Worked example

Example: A minor into E minor

A minor is 1m in Open Key and 8A as a Camelot code. E minor is 2m and 9A. Because they are adjacent minor keys, the calculator marks the transition as compatible while still recommending that you check the actual melodies by ear.

Assumptions and limits

  • Key-analysis software can identify the wrong tonal center or mode, especially in ambiguous tracks.
  • Compatible keys reduce one source of clashes but do not guarantee that vocals, melodies, bass lines or arrangements will blend well.
  • Transitions outside the conservative relationships can still work through percussion, short blends, deliberate tension or key shifting.
